The beginning of the Orienteering Trail is located at the chimney on the Stone Mountain Historical Trail about 100 yards after crossing the railroad on the south side of the mountain. It can also be reached by going out the gate of the Youth Area #2 parking lot and going across the road and about 100 yards up the hill. A green metal pipe behind the chimney is the first marker and the bearing and distance is marked on the pipe, as it is on all the others on this course. The first four pipes are green and the rest are white. All distances have been measured.
The chimney, which can be used to pass the Boy Scout requirement to estimate height, is 17 feet 6 inches high.
Starting from the marker at the chimney, there is a marker at exactly 100 feet for the hikers to measure their stride on the way to Station #2.
There are some rare and endangered plants along this trail, so please take care not to step on any flowers. Cutting or hacking of any trees or shrubs is prohibited in the park. Please be a good hiker and pick up any litter found in the woods.
The orienteering course is of moderate difficulty, but can be easily traversed if it is done in short distances at a time. After getting your bearing, pick out a tree or object close enough that you wont lose track of it. After reaching that, take the bearing again for another short distance, probably no more than 50-100 feet at a time. The course should take 2-3 hours to complete.
WARNING! At some points the course runs through briars and poison ivy. It is recommended that long pants be worn.
